Motivating the Project Team

Academic research ยท November 15, 2010

A research paper on the theories, practices, and leadership behaviours that help project teams remain effective, committed, and motivated.

Context

Project teams bring together people with different expertise, priorities, reporting relationships, and cultural backgrounds. This paper explored how leaders can sustain motivation when traditional markers of status and career progression are less available.

Approach

The research connected motivation theory - including Maslow, Herzberg, McClelland, and McGregor - with project-team practice. It examined the project environment, team-development stages, leadership behaviours, the role of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and the NASA Autonomous Rotorcraft Project case.

Outcome

The paper found that motivation is situational rather than formulaic. Fair pay matters, but purpose, feedback, recognition, growth, participation, clear responsibilities, and leaders who balance management with inspiration are central to sustained team performance.
