Securing Innovation

Academic research ยท February 8, 2011

A research paper on how managers can create the conditions for innovation, identify promising opportunities, and turn ideas into sustained organizational capability.

Context

Innovation brings uncertainty as well as opportunity. The paper considers how project managers can guide innovation through changing markets, technologies, organizational constraints, and the risk that good ideas will not be recognized or carried through.

Approach

The research reviewed models of innovation, the organizational conditions that support a creative climate, idea-management practices, and a 3M case study. It considered innovation across products, processes, business models, and markets.

Outcome

The paper argues that securing innovation requires more than generating ideas: it needs strategic leadership, learning capability, a supportive climate, mechanisms to evaluate opportunities, and disciplined selection of high-impact ideas that can be implemented.
